Landscape Review Topic – November 2011

What is a good tree to plant?

The following are a list of suggested trees to consider when adding to an existing mixed landscape area or xeriscape setting.  Each specimen has positive attributes and enhances the overall layout of the yard.  Here are (4) four suggested easy to maintain desert trees for review.

Acacia Mulga

This is a tough and attractive evergreen tree.  A great specimen for accent or patio applications.  May take full sun and heat, is drought tolerant, adapts to many soils, and is clean with low maintenance acacia.

Acacia Willow

Will do well in full sun and is an evergreen tree.  This tree will grow to 20’ – 40’ tall and will require thinning and crowning to permit less wind resistance during monsoons.

Desert Museum Hybrid Palo Verde

This is a great shade tree, an excellent specimen, can take full sun and is low maintenance once established.  This tree is highly desirable due to rapid growth, thorn less, has a strong upright branch structure, dramatic yellow flowers that are seasonal and retains insignificant

When grown in containers, most trees and shrubs as well as cacti and succulents can be planted year-round in arid climates.  However, succulent plants are dug and delivered bare root, the warm season is the best planting time, preferably mid-spring rather than fall.

Watering in the beginning is critical to all newly planted species.  The first four to six weeks may require daily irrigation.  Do not over-water.  The root ball of all shrubs, trees and succulents need moisture to develop and encourage new root growth.  After (4) four to (6) six weeks, the irrigation schedule may be modified to an every-other or every-third or fourth day program.  You must visually inspect the newly transplanted specimen.  Nothing will replace a visual review followed by an adjustment to the bubbler, emitter or automated timer schedule.

Please call with any questions on irrigation times and frequency for most native trees, shrubs and succulents.

Desert Vine News – May 2011

Our weather continues to be unseasonably mild and is ideal for all types of planting.

Now is a great time to fertilize. Always select a quality all purpose fertilizer. Specialty products have been developed that stimulate and provide sustainable nutrients for Citrus and Palm Trees, Roses, Turf, and traditional foliage.

Rye turf will subside by the end of May. Variations continue to occur predicated on these unseasonable weather patterns.

Dormant Bermuda Hybrids will be stimulated by cutting the turf lower than normal to expose the roots to 100 degree plus temperatures. The advent of this temperature and increase of water time and day frequency will permit the Bermuda to proliferate.

By June 15th, “Starter Fertilizer” will be applied to all Lawns and Time Clocks will be re-programmed for additional water cycles. Lawns with challenges such as: significant brown spots, weeds and hard soil dry spots will be treated with optional services. Optional services may include, de-thatching, aerating, soil amendments, and weed and feed applications.

A “Weed and Feed” product is only applied after the Bermuda Turf is fully developed. The goal is to ensure that the Turf is strong enough to repel a weed abatement chemical process.

Vincas are the primary flower that thrives in triple digit temperatures. They are available in several colors and will sustain growth through October. Please contact us for an estimate on optional Flower planting in selected existing irrigated pots.

We have created an associate vendor listing for your review. Once again, please feel free to contact any vendor for information or proprietary service.
